Better Sleep for Seniors


Being able to sleep through the night is one of the best things in the world, but it seems that as some of us age, it becomes more and more difficult to hold down a normal sleeping schedule. Managing even four to five hours each evening feels like a chore: and you can’t seem to stop yourself from staying up through all hours of the night. As we get older and start to climb into the elder years, we’ve got less responsibility or “reason” to sleep well, but that doesn’t mean we should completely give up on a full night’s rest! Decent sleep is one of the things that keeps your body going through the day. It’s one of many types of “fuel” that your body needs to perform at its best levels: so you’ve always got to remember to get your beauty rest. If you’ve been struggling to get into the groove of sleeping peacefully throughout the night, these quick tips should help you get on the right track.

  • Wind down before you go to sleep. Do you tend to watch fear-inducing shows on television before you hit the sack? Well, it could be that this is one of the biggest reasons why you struggle to get good shut-eye at the end of the night! Spend some time doing calming activities—like taking deep breaths and reading—before you crawl into bed. Have a cup of warm tea or milk to lull your body into “rest mode”!
  • Get up and move around during the day. If you’ve got even a fair range of mobility, there’s no excuse for you not to be working your body out on a daily basis. Simply taking a walk or stretching is great for your overall health: and it can help make you more ready for your sleep each night. Find low-stress ways to use more energy during the day, and it will be that much easier for you to sleep soundly.
  • Throw yourself into a routine. Train your body to get used to waking up and falling asleep at the same time each day. This will also train your brain into resting as much as possible. Try to avoid sitting around in your bed whenever you’re not sleeping or getting ready to go to sleep.
  • Keep in touch with your doctor. If you’re unable to get a good night’s rest because of some physical ailment, it’s important for you to get in for an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor or physician is there to help you be at your best, and they should be able to provide you with tools that can enhance your state of wellbeing: and the state of your sleep!

No matter what you’ve heard, bad sleep is not a symptom of getting older. There are a number of things that can be done for you to attain a better level of sleep, but you’ve got to be ready to do something about it! As an elderly person, you want to be able to sleep just as well as you always did, and getting older shouldn’t change that fact.
